I chose these films based on the following criteria; Gripping, intelligent storytelling, good character development, excellent score, superb lighting and camera work, meticulous attention to visual details, beautiful settings.
#1 Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
The dramatic true story of a poor fisherman's daughter who became a famous courtesan in pre-World War II Japan, and how she took hold of her own destiny. Based on Arthur Golden's book.
#2 Perfume- The Story of a Murderer (2006)
The (thankfully) not true tale based on the book by Patrick Suskind, the story of how a young man gifted with incredible sense of smell is led to destruction by his talents. (More beautifully told than such a creepy premise should ever be.)
#3 I Am Love (2010)
The sensual awakening of a cloistered woman who seems to have it all, until she meets a certain chef half her age. Like an homage to Italians and their love of food, women and romance in general, until it ends in a crescendo of choices.
